British Values

The Government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values were reiterated in 2014.  At St Joseph’s these values are reinforced on a daily basis through our conversations with the children and their families; through our curriculum and through our monthly values calendar.  It permeates all aspects of school life.

According to Ofsted, ‘fundamental British values’ are:

  • democracy
  • the rule of law
  • individual liberty
  • mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith.
The DfE have reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

Mutual Respect

A perfect example of mutual respect - here we have two of our Year 6 pupils. Their blossoming friendship has resulted in meaningful discussion and debate; supportive partner work and a show of respect as each invited the other up when they were recognised for showing our monthly value, peace.  Keep it up!
