Home learning expectations

Homework is due by the following Friday each week. Each week children will be set an English and Maths task to complete. They will also be sent home a list of spelling they need to practice for our weekly spelling tests. Children will also be sent home with three reading books each week:

A star reading book for you to enjoy with your child together. This is ok for you to read to them.

A familiar read write Inc book which your child has been practising in school. They will be able to read this to you.

A unfamiliar read write Inc book matched to their level of reading. They will be able to read this to you.

We ask that children bring their book bags in with them each day.

Trips throughout the year

As part of our enrichment and entitlement initiative, we are due to visit Leasowe lighthouse, the Liverpool Museum for a ‘Toys from the past’ workshop, as well as the pantomime and Chester Zoo in January!

The importance of reading

In year 1 our focus is to ensure children build on their reading skills such as identifying, blending, and decoding words and sounds. We follow the RWI programme to ensure children have access to high quality lessons which will develop their reading skills.

We also explore various genres and ideas of texts, helping to expand their knowledge and imagination. Additionally, reading helps foster a love for literature and a lifelong habit of learning.
